Salt intrusion and ecosystem change: leading edge of climate change on Carolina Coast

Dr. Emily Bernhardt visits PSLA!

March 23, 2016

Dr. Emily Bernhardt 3/10:

Coastal plains and their associated wetlands are natural buffer zones between freshwater runoff and saltwater intrusion. After years of agricultural use these landscapes are marked for restoration. However, the drastic changes in hydrology and soil chemistry of these post-agricultural landscapes in the face of climate change may not allow for a return to the sought after “natural state”. Instead, Dr. Emily Bernhardt and her lab at Duke University focus on sustainable restoration with the aim of finding the best trajectory for maximized carbon sequestration and minimized ecosystem loss.
