LARC students participate in PARK(ing) Day!

SASLA transforms parking spaces on campus into a park for a day

September 21, 2015

On September 18, 2015, Landscape Architecture students in the Student American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) transformed parking spaces into a temporary park. The park was showcased on Campus Drive in front of the Cole building from 10am to 3pm. Students created the park to raise awareness on the global event called PARK(ing) Day, which is celebrated annually on the third Friday of September.

The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call citizen attention on the notion of relocating vehicles to private storages and maximizing urban public spaces. Ultimately, activists who started the project in 2005 had the single goal of challenging people to make better use of the environment in order to edify and benefit their communities.

ASLA students promoted this task of redefining urban landscape by enthusiastically presenting UMD with the park they designed themselves. Their creativity and craftsmanship encouraged many around campus to engage with this global project. More information on PARK(ing) can be found at www.parkingday.org.
