Dr. Christopher Ellis, is leading innovative research that helps communities visualize and prepare for future flooding. Using advanced laser scanning, drone imagery, and virtual reality technology, Dr. Ellis has developed a 3D flood visualization model that creates realistic, street-level simulations of flood impacts. The technology is already helping residents, planners, and local officials in Baltimore and Prince George's County identify vulnerable areas, advocate for infrastructure improvements, and make more informed decisions about resilience and community development.“We’re trying to help people visualize the future in 3D, kind of like a time machine. If you can visualize a flood before it happens, you can do something about it before it causes pain.”- Dr. Ellis

This is helping transform how communities and planners prepare for climate-related challenges. Reflecting on the value of immersive visualization tools, Dr. Ellis notes, We don’t live in a two-dimensional world,” he said. “Why are we still making life-or-death decisions with the limitations of two-dimensional data?

This research highlights how PSLA faculty are advancing innovative solutions that directly benefit Maryland communities by making complex environmental risks more understandable, accessible, and actionable.
