Research

Dr. Walsh conducts integrated research and extension programs in four broad areas:

  1. Apple Maturity Assessments
  2. Sustainable Fruit Production
  3. Maryland Tree Architecture Project
  4. Food Safety of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables.

The program has received a variety of grant support during the past decade.  Much of this support has come from the US Department of Agriculture in the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) and also the Specialty Crop Block Grant program (SCBG) with funding awarded to the Maryland Department of Agriculture.

Through his appointment in the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station Dr. Walsh participates in two regional projects that underpin these two broad topics.  They are:

NE-1336 Improving Quality and Reducing Losses in Specialty Fruit Crops through Storage Technologies

NC-140 Improving Economic and Environmental Sustainability in Tree Fruit Production through Changes in Rootstock Use

NC-140 2015 National Multistate Research Winner, Improving Sustainability in Fruit Tree Production through Changes in Rootstock Use
