The Forest Service administers the nation's 154 national forests and 20 national grasslands, which encompass 193 million acres (an area the size of Texas). These lands include 36 million acres of Wilderness, 122 wild and scenic rivers, and 156,000 miles of trails. Forest Service landscape architects have long been integral in defining the character of our national forests and grasslands, creating a sense of place through what they build, where they build, and how they maintain recreation sites.
This presentation will look back through 100 years of Forest Service landscape architecture history. It will highlight the many contributions that landscape architects have made to the conservation and enhancement of our public lands. And it will examine how their work continues to affect the way that people find value and meaning in their national forests and grasslands.

Bio information / resume
Matt Arnn, ASLA provides professional leadership to the agency’s 120+ landscape architects practicing on over 190 million acres of National Forests and Grasslands. His work stresses the integration of social and ecological places and processes, creating physical and emotional points of entry and engagement for visitors to public lands. Matt has worked across the continent and abroad, designing and planning visitor centers, trails, campgrounds, interpretation experiences, scenic overlooks, night sky viewing areas, and other recreation infrastructure. His work after September 11, 2001 with the Forest Service Living Memorials Project led to the creation of over 50 new parks and open spaces to help affected communities regain traction through investment in their public places.
